My Conversation with Pete Buttigieg at the U.S. Conference of Mayors Winter Conference
It was great spending time with my U.S. Conference of Mayors colleagues and Transportation Secretary-designate Pete Buttigieg at our virtual winter conference today.
I want to congratulate Pete on his nomination to Transportation Secretary, where I know he’ll be confirmed shortly, and thank him for his kind words about the successes happening in Normal right now, including a shout-out to the electric vehicle innovations being spearheaded by Rivian.
The “perks” of being virtual for our winter conference included not getting snow-bound in D.C. as Pete recalled — though that is certainly the kind of adventure I eagerly look forward to once it’s safe to gather again in large groups.
My conversation with Pete today (watch my conversation or the entire session at C-SPAN) centered on Amtrak, where I’ve been appointed to the board of directors. Focusing on a long-term funding strategy versus year-to-year appropriations will allow Amtrak to budget for much-needed repairs, increase on-time arrivals and ensure the reliability of train travel for passengers.
For example, departing Normal and arriving in Chicago on time should be a given, not a gamble!
I am encouraged by Secretary-designate Buttigieg’s commitment to Amtrak, and I look forward to continuing our conversation.
Focusing on innovations in transportation and collaborating on best practices with other mayors will be a continued priority for me if re-elected as your mayor on April 6.
